Yokohama Port opened on July 1, 1859. The following year, in 1860, people brought out and other floats to celebrate the first anniversary of the port’s opening; this is considered the origin of the anniversary celebration.

The current Yokohama Port Opening Festival began with the “International Day Pre-Yokohama Dontaku” in 1981 and was officially held for the first time in 1982.

The event was named the “Yokohama Dontaku Port Opening Festival” in 1993, and has been called the “Yokohama Port Opening Festival” since 1995.
