About Sakaide Salt Festival
The Sakaide Salt Festival is an event held in Sakaide, Kagawa Prefecture, to express gratitude for salt, a local specialty.
Carrying on the spirit of Michiken Kume, who devoted himself to developing the salt fields, and sharing his achievements and aspirations are also important pillars of the festival.
Through traditional salt-making and activities featuring salt, visitors can get a close-up feel for Sakaide’s salt industry and the region’s history.

Festival highlights
A highlight is the chance to experience traditional salt-making by boiling down brine.
The “salt slide,” made with a large quantity of salt, has been set up as a play area combining a flat section and a slope.
Other programs that offer a taste of Sakaide’s history and food have also been featured, including demonstrations of the matchlock firearm improved and developed by Michiken Kume, and complimentary rice balls seasoned with salt alone.

Origins and History of Sakaide Salt Festival
The Sakaide Salt Festival began in 1992 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sakaide’s municipal status and the 35th anniversary of the Sakaide Junior Chamber, against the backdrop of changes in local events following the opening of the Seto Ohashi Bridge.
The first festival was held at Seto Ohashi Memorial Park, and subsequent festivals have also been held at Utazu Seaside Park and around Sakaide Station.
In fiscal 2010, the venue and dates were changed, and the festival evolved into an event organized together with various local groups.
