Origins and History of Narita Gion Festival

The Narita Gion-e was held as a festival centered on Yudonosan Gongen Shrine, which Naritasan administered during the Edo period. Over time, it evolved into a festival for Dainichi Nyorai.

The origins of the present-day style of pulling dashi are said to date to the late Edo period, but the exact date it began is unknown.

Processions of mikoshi, dashi, and yatai, along with each neighborhood’s music and dances, have been passed down, making this a local event with a long history.
