Origins and History of Shizunai Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom Avenue and Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival

Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom Avenue was developed as a route for members of the Imperial Family to visit the Imperial Household Ministry’s ranch, which once stood here.

It is said that cherry trees, including Ezo-yamazakura, were transplanted from nearby mountains over a period of 3 years starting in 1916.

The name comes from the road’s width of twenty ken, about 36 m. Today, it is selected as one of the “100 Best Roads in Japan,” one of the “100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots,” and a “Hokkaido Heritage” site.
